This guide is an overview of a certain location in the Witcher 3. The guide is composed of a map, map legend, and walkthrough of all the various points.
Overview
1 – Ruins
You’ll encounter a level 18 forktail at the ruins here. If you can defeat it, then inside the ruins in the northwestern corner, you’ll find a chest containing the diagram for Enhanced Griffin Boots.
2 – Troll Camp
When you first arrive at this camp, you’ll see Boris the troll being attacked by several nekkers. After defeating the nekkers, you’ll learn that Boris was using a nekker to spice up his soup, and that the other nekkers didn’t approve. For helping Boris out, you’ll receive an Elf Head and 25 xp. You’ll also find a couple of nice containers in the camp.
3 – Crossroads
In this small village you’ll find an inn and a couple of houses. The innkeep will have some gwent cards for sale, and you’ll need to talk to him for the quest The Nilfgaardian Connection. You’ll also find a notice board in the village that will give you the quests Contract: Missing Brother and Wild at Heart.
4 – Hidden Treasure (Corpse)
At this location you’ll spot a corpse on the ground surrounded by several nekkers. After defeating the nekkers, when you loot the corpse you’ll find a Letter and a Treasure Key, which will trigger the quest The Things Men Do for Coin.
5 – Cottage
When you come up to this cottage, you’ll spot a wild dog prowling around outside. After defeating it, when you talk to the people trapped in the cottage, you’ll learn that they’re unwanted children, and that they haven’t been eating well. If you give them food or money, then you’ll receive the book In Sheep’s Clothing (which will give you the recipe for Werewolf Decoction), a Doll, and 10 xp.
6 – Old Mine
This mine is involved in the quest Contract: Missing Brother.
7 – Border Post
When you try to cross between Novigrad and Velen via the small island here, you’ll be stopped at the gate, and you’ll receive the quest Thou Shalt Not Pass.
8 – Refugee Camp
You’ll find two things of interest at this camp. The notice board will give you the quest Contract: Woodland Beast, and the shady merchant will give you the quest Fake Papers.
9 – Albin Hart
Hart will give you the quest Bitter Harvest.
10 – Person in Distress (Merchant)
You’ll discover a deserter camp here, complete with a handful of deserters and a treasure chest. One of the deserters will drop a Cage Key when he dies, which you’ll be able to use to open the cage holding a merchant. When you release the merchant, he’ll make his way to the northwest to the refugee camp (#8), where he’ll set up shop across the road from the shady merchant. He’ll mostly have alchemy ingredients for sale.
11 – Monster Den (Nekkers)
You’ll find lots of useful things at the den here. Just outside the den, you’ll find a pair of random treasure chests. In the front part of the den, you’ll find a chest containing the diagrams for Superior Ursine Armor, Superior Ursine Boots, Superior Ursine Gauntlets, and Superior Ursine Trousers. In the back part of the den, you’ll encounter several nekkers, including some nekker warriors, one of which will drop a Nekker Warrior Mutagen. You’ll also find two more treasure chests in the back of the den.
12 – Burning House
When you reach this spot, you’ll see three bandits trying to burn down a house with somebody inside. If you attack the bandits, then you’ll trigger the quest Death by Fire.
13 – Hindhold
You’ll find a few things of interest at this site:
- The document Aen N’og Mab Taedh’morc (on a skeleton on the lower level). This item will have a quest marker on it, but it’s not a part of any quest.
- A harpy nest (on the upper level).
- Balstick’s Letter, the diagram for Griffin Steel Sword, and Witcher George’s Confession (on a corpse and in a chest on the upper level). These items are involved in the scavenger hunt for Griffin School Gear.

19 – Stonecutters’ Settlement
You won’t find any shopkeepers in this village, just some containers to loot and some soldiers to avoid. In one house you’ll discover three Drawings of the Beast of Toussaint. These are connected to the Blood and Wine DLC, but you can pick them up and sell them if you want.
20 – Codger’s Quarry
When you first arrive here, the residents won’t be thrilled to see you. But when you defeat an alghoul attack from the quarry, you’ll earn 10 xp, and they’ll change their tune. Inside the quarry, you’ll find lots of mushrooms, plus the diagram for Enhanced Feline Gauntlets.
21 – Devil’s Pit
You’ll encounter several bandits in this former quarry, and you’ll also find a ton of containers to loot — but only one treasure chest. There are some caverns beneath the pit, but there isn’t any way to enter them without cheating.
22 – Mulbrydale
You’ll find a few things of interest in this village:
- For two of the houses, you’ll have to use Aard (or your weapon) to knock down the front door. Inside each of these of these houses, you’ll find a treasure chest and other lootable containers.
- The notice board won’t give you any quests, but examining it will mark some undiscovered locations on your map.
- You’ll meet a swordsmith (amateur armorer) here after rescuing him from the camp to the southwest (#25). He’ll have a grindstone and an armorer’s table in front of his house.
23 – Priest of Eternal Fire
The priest here will give you the quest Funeral Pyres.
24 – John Verdun
At this spot you’ll find a man named John Verdun tied up with a couple of drowners nearby. If you kill the drowners and free Verdun, then you’ll earn 25 xp, and you’ll meet Verdun again later in Novigrad (where he’ll be a bandit, and you’ll either collect a 50 crown reward from him, or you’ll kill him for his misdeeds). If you ignore Verdun (including traveling just a little too close to his location without realizing it), then the drowners will eventually kill him.
25 – Person in Distress (Swordsmith)
You’ll encounter some level 7 slavers and some level 14 deserters here. One of the deserters will drop a key when he dies, which you’ll be able to use to free a swordsmith from a cage. The swordsmith will then head to Mulbrydale (#22).
26 – Abandoned Site (Fireburst Harbor) / Hidden Treasure
If you defeat the four drowners at the abandoned harbor here, then you’ll earn 90 xp, and peasants will return to work. Just to the east of the harbor, you’ll discover a corpse in the water. Looting the letter in its possession will trigger the quest An Unfortunate Turn of Events.
27 – Merchants
At this spot you’ll discover Anselm and Griswold being attacked by bandits. After rescuing the duo, you’ll learn that they’re merchants and that the bandits were actually their guards. You’ll also discover a purple barrier blocking you from most of the ruins. You’ll get to remove the barrier during the quest Redania’s Most Wanted.
38 – Herbalist’s Hut
You’ll meet an herbalist here. He’ll have ingredients and potion formulas for sale. If you ask him about advanced formulas, then he’ll direct you to Master Gremist in Ard Skellig, which will trigger the quest Practicum in Advanced Alchemy. The herbalist and his hut are also involved in the Hearts of Stone DLC quests Open Sesame! and Without a Trace.

40 – Cage
At some point when you pass by this cage, you’ll witness a beast tamer charging soldiers to see “the most truest of basilisks.” When you point out that the baslisk is really a young, underfed wyvern, the soldiers will demand their money back. During the commotion, the level 10 wyvern will break free from its cage, all of the soldiers will attack it, and the beast tamer will flee. When the wyvern dies, you’ll earn 25 xp.
41 – House
In front of the house here, you’ll meet a peasant who will give you the quest Spooked Mare.
42 – Aeramas’ Abandoned Manor
The ruined manor here is involved in the quest Of Dairy and Darkness. You’ll find the diagram for Enhanced Feline Armor in a chest at the manor. You’ll also find a strange lever that will make it very dark when you pull it, but it’s not a part of anything.
