Va Fail, Elaine – Witcher 3 Quest

This guide is a walkthrough of a main quest of the Witcher 3 in the area of Kaer Morhen. The guide is composed of a map, map legend, and walkthrough to show readers exactly where to go and what to do to complete the quest.

Background

You’ll automatically trigger this quest at the end of the quest No Place Like Home.

Walkthrough

When you start this quest, you’ll learn that Vesemir’s plan for curing Uma didn’t work, which means you’ll have to try out Yennefer’s plan of subjecting Uma to the first part of the Trial of Grasses. This will require you to brew The Decoctions of the Grasses. Yennefer will give you the recipe, and you’ll find the ingredients — Forktail Spinal FluidManticore Poison GlandAlbino Bruxa TongueBryoniaRibleaf, and Mandrake Root — on a nearby table.

When you show the decoctions to Yennefer, she’ll begin the procedure. You’ll get to help out by administering the decoctions. Each time you give one to Uma, he’ll begin screaming, but you won’t be allowed to stop. Eventually, the procedure will work — at least in a way. You’ll capture the curse in Ciri’s phylactery, but you’ll discover that Uma is really an elven sage named Avallac’h and not Ciri.

Avallac’h will be weak from the ordeal, but he’ll still tell you a few things of interest — that Ciri is hiding on The Isle of Mists, that the Wild Hunt doesn’t know where she is, and that the Wild Hunt is looking for her because they need her blood to open some sort of gate. At the end of the conversation, Avallac’h will give you a Magic Firefly, which will allow you to find the isle when you take it to Skellige.

Before you can leave, Vesemir will suggest that you bring Ciri to Kaer Morhen, and that you acquire some allies to help out against the Wild Hunt. This will complete the quest and earn you 1500 xp. It will also trigger the next two main quests: The Isle of Mists (to find Ciri) and Brothers in Arms (to acquire allies).
