The Volunteer – Witcher 3 Quest

This guide is a walkthrough of a side quest in the Witcher 3 for the area of Velen. The guide is composed of a map, map legend, and walkthrough to show readers exactly where to go and what to do to complete the quest.

Background

You’ll receive this quest from the singing rock troll in White Eagle Fort in Velen North (#1).

Walkthrough

The troll will tell you how he was recruited by the Redanian army to guard the boats at the fort — which the soldiers had stolen from some local peasants — and how he accidentally killed everybody when the peasants tried to take them back. He’ll then ask you to get him some red and white paint so he can make the fort look more official.

You’ll have two options for how to complete the quest:

• You can kill the troll. This will earn you 50 xp, and you’ll probably find some troll parts on his corpse.
  
• You can head into the nearby city of Oxenfurt and purchase Paint from the merchant there (#2). This will cost you 16 crowns. When you return to the troll, he’ll ask you to paint the Redanian “birdo” on the fort. You can either agree to do this or force the troll to do the painting himself. It won’t make any difference (except that the troll will do a much better job than you). For your reward, you’ll receive diagrams for Axeman’s Gauntlets and Gven’nel, Deer Hide (x5), Goat Hide (x10), and 50 xp.
