Out of the Frying Pan, Into the Fire - Witcher 3 Quest

This guide is a walkthrough of a side quest in the Witcher 3 for the area of Velen. The guide is composed of a map, map legend, and walkthrough to show readers exactly where to go and what to do to complete the quest.

1 – Burned Village

Background

Amongst the ruins of a burned village in Velen East (#1), you’ll discover that a cellar is still intact. You’ll have to use Aard or your weapon to break through its door, but once inside you’ll find a corpse holding some Crumpled Notes and a key. Looting these items will trigger the quest.

Walkthrough

When you read the notes, you’ll learn that one of the villagers hid some things in a haystack near the village. The quest will tell you to turn on your witcher senses to find the hiding place, but this won’t actually help you much. Instead, you should just look for the haystack, which is located on the northern side of the village. Just barely visible in the back of the haystack you’ll spot a locked chest, which the key will unlock. Inside the chest you’ll find a leveled version of the Mag Deira Cuirass, plus some random items. Looting the chest will complete the quest.
