Magic Lamp – Witcher 3 Quest

This guide is a walkthrough of a side quest in the Witcher 3 for the area of Velen. The guide is composed of a map, map legend, and walkthrough to show readers exactly where to go and what to do to complete the quest.

Background

You’ll receive this quest from Keira Metz in the Elven Ruins in Velen South at the end of the quest Wandering in the Dark (#1), provided that you agree to help her find the Magic Lamp that the elven mage promised her.

Walkthrough

After you’ve accepted the quest, Keira will lead you to a room with four statues and a closed door (#2). When you examine the door, you’ll see that it has a riddle inscribed on it. The riddle will give you clues for how to open the door. These clues will involve the statues and the right order in which to ignite them.

If you look at the statues from left to right, then you’ll see that they have:

  1. Dog and instrument
  2. Instrument
  3. Nothing
  4. Dog

The four clues are:

  • “The first … dared not march on the end.” So the first can only be 2 or 3.
  • “The second by the first played a woeful lament.” So the second can only be 1 or 2.
  • “The third kept close to his faithful beast.” So the third can only be 1 or 4.
  • “The fourth marches not beside the first [and] played a tune.” So the fourth has to be 1 (since 2 is either the first or by the first).

Since the fourth is 1, that means the second has to be 2, the first has to be 3, and the third has to be 4. So you should light the statues in order 3-2-4-1. If you try to light a statue in the wrong order then you’ll get attacked by a wraith. The wraith won’t drop anything and it isn’t worth any xp, so there isn’t any benefit to getting the answer wrong on purpose.

When you complete the riddle correctly, the door will open, and Keira will head right for the Magic Lamp (#3). When you catch up to her, she’ll claim the lamp for herself and announce that it’s finally time to leave the Elven Ruins. Before leaving, you might want to read the Sage’s Notes located right next to where the lamp was. The notes will reveal that the lamp allows people to talk to spirits.

When you exit the ruins (via Exit A), you’ll complete the quest and earn 100 xp. Keira will then invite you to see her sometime, which will trigger the quest An Invitation from Keira Metz.
