This guide is a walkthrough of a side quest in the Witcher 3 at the Kaer Morhen area. The guide is composed of a map, map legend, and walkthrough to show readers exactly where to go and what to do to complete the quest.

Background

You’ll trigger this quest by looting Berengar’s Notes from a chest on the western side of Kaer Morhen‘s outer courtyard (#1).

Walkthrough

From the notes you’ll learn that the witcher Berengar was attempting — but failing — to forge the silver sword Tor’haerne, and that Vesemir was assisting him. You’ll find Vesemir somewhere at the keep. If he’s at the front gate with Uma, then he won’t talk to you. But if he’s inside the main hall (which is where he’ll go after you’ve spoken to Yennefer for the quest Disturbance), then he’ll tell you that while Berengar was working on the sword, he went out to face a chort — only the chort ended up being too powerful for him, and he dropped his sword-making notes when he fled. Vesemir will then add that since Berengar subsequently left Kaer Morhen never to return, his notes are probably still with the chort.

You’ll find the chort’s cave to the east (Exit A). Inside, you’ll run into the chort almost right away (#2). Chorts are relicts, so be sure to apply some Relict Oil to your silver sword before you start the fight. After defeating the chort, when you explore its cave you’ll find two containers of interest. In a chest (#3) you’ll find the diagram for Superior Wolven Boots, and in a sack (#4) you’ll find the diagram for Tor’haerne. Looting the Tor’haerne diagram will complete the quest and earn you 50 xp.

Note: The diagram for this quest will allow you to craft a level 27 “relic” version of Tor’haerne. You might have purchased a diagram for the level 23 “magic” version of Tor’haerne earlier in the game. The relic version is better.
