Skywind: Recreating The World Of Morrowind

Skywind

What if you could take Morrowind, one of the most beloved games in the Elder Scrolls series, and make it look and play like Skyrim? Replace the now dated graphics from 2002 and expand the world into a rich, detailed environment every bit as beautiful and immersive as a modern day RPG?

What sounds like a dream is becoming a reality with project Skywind. A group of dedicated gamers is seeking to bring the world of Morrowind, the third game in the Elder Scrolls series, into the Skyrim game engine.

The Skywind project began back in 2012 with 8 dedicated volunteers. Today, the number of volunteers hard at work tops 70. This number includes talented voice actors, script writers, concept artists, landscapers, 3D modelers, weapons and armor designers, and music composers.

With Skywind, great progress is being made in recreating the world of Morrowind for a new generation of gamers. This project isn’t simply the porting an older game into a new game engine — Skywind is a rebirth of sorts, with updated meshes, textures, scenery and regions. Everything is being rebuilt from the ground up.

Brand new music is being composed true to the original score, as well as custom made models of creatures and armor. In addition, voice actors are busy recording over 30,000 lines of unique dialog (the original Morrowind was never truly voice acted), and over 600 quests are being implemented into the game. When finished, Skywind promises to be as immersive as Skyrim, and truly will be the most ambitious modding project ever completed.

The Making of Skywind

Recently, the Skywind team released a video titled The Making of Skywind to showcase the amazing progress made so far in the game. As it stands, a lot of work has been completed recreating the physical environment and terrain. Much more work is needed though in implementing the quests and completing the dialog.

If you’re a fan of the Elder Scrolls, you’re going to be excited after watching this video. Remember: Skywind is a fan-based labor of love and the team needs volunteers. If you’re interested in learning more, checkout the Skywind forum pages here.
