Hard Landing Walkthrough

Background

Raymond Black. The old man gave you a home once. Took you and Duncan off the gang-ridden streets of the Barrens — sheltered, educated, slapped sense into you both, until you almost resembled productive members of society.

And then you took off. Left it all behind. Landed behind bars for a time, tried to start a new life after that. It’s been eight years since you’ve heard Raymond’s voice. Until out of the blue, you got this cryptic message, a plea for help: “Meet me in Hong Kong, right away.” And, wired to your account, enough nuyen to pay for the flight and then some.

The descent is rough. A squall comes out of nowhere, sending a solid sheet of rain punching into the suborbital transport. With a ragged shudder, the plane finally skids to a halt at the edge of the Chek Lap Kok tarmac. An hour and an interminable number of emotionless security checkpoints later, you hail a water taxi to Victoria Harbour. Hong Kong looms ahead, pulsing with energy.

Karma Points

  • [1] Make it past the smugglers (#6).
  • [5] Complete the mission.

Walkthrough

You’ll begin this mission on a dock (#1) with your old friend Duncan and his Lone Star partner Carter. They’ll accompany you as you head for your meeting with Raymond. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to use the main gate to the docks (#2), so you’ll have to jimmy open a side gate (#3). With Intelligence 3, you’ll be able to bypass the lock yourself. Otherwise, Carter will take care of it. Past the gate, you’ll enter a construction area.

Inside the construction area, you’ll run into a group of drug smugglers. They won’t be happy to see you, and a battle will start. Focus your attacks and take down the smugglers one at a time. Don’t forget to use Carter for buffing and healing. After the battle, you’ll find Tokko in a box (#4). To exit the construction area, you’ll have to deal with another gate (#5), but this time you won’t get any options. Carter will open it.

Past the construction area, you’ll run into more smugglers, but they won’t see you. This will allow you to avoid them. If you attack the smugglers anyway, then you’ll find a Basic Medkit on one of their bikes after the battle. Otherwise, you won’t gain or lose anything. To exit the area with the smugglers, you’ll need to push a large crate away from a break in the fence (#6). When you step through the fence, you’ll gain a point of karma. Nearby, you’ll find a lanyard containing some nuyen (#7).

When you reach the parking lot where you were supposed to meet Raymond (#8), you won’t find him there. Instead, you’ll run into a group of shadowrunners. They’ll tell you that Raymond hired them to take him into Kowloon Walled City (“the worst slum in the eastern hemisphere”), but before you can learn anything else from them, the police will show up and open fire. Carter, Gutshot (the Silent Elf), and Nightjar (the Husky Troll) will get killed, and you’ll be tasked with finding cover. Any cover will do.

When you move behind cover, the police will call out for you to surrender, and they’ll list you and Duncan by name. At this point, Gobbet (the Young Ork) and Is0bel (the Shy Dwarf) will join your team, and Gobbet will find an escape route through the sewers to the west (Exit A). All you’ll have to do is kill or run past the police guarding the way. About halfway down the street, you’ll come to a police bike with a decking access point (#9). With Decking 2, you’ll be able to turn off the two police drones. With Drone Control 2, you’ll be able to switch the drones to your side. You won’t gain anything from killing the police, so focus on escaping rather than killing.

Inside the sewers, you’ll catch your breath. Duncan will take out his PDA and try to call in Lone Star backup, but he’ll discover that his law enforcement status has been revoked. Then you’ll see a news report where the four of you have been named as White Star terrorists, and that the police want you dead or alive — but mostly dead. So you’ll decide to stick together and work from the shadows, which means you’ll have to burn your System Identification Numbers and go SINless. Gobbet will suggest that you meet her team’s fixer, a woman named Kindly Cheng, who lives in Heoi.

When you exit the sewers (via Exit B), you’ll automatically take the Mass Transit Railway system (MTR) to Heoi. This will complete the mission and earn you 5 karma points, and also trigger the mission SINless.
