Military Tunnels – Rust Monument Guide

In this guide, we will be exploring the Military Tunnels monument. This guide contains the general strategy and meta for the monument, a map with Crate spawn locations, and callouts so you can more easily navigate the monument. It also has the solution to the Red Card puzzle found on this map.

For info on how to read the map and some more general information about the guide, please refer to the Map Key in the Main Guide.

General Info

Military Tunnels are an extremely lucrative monument — if you can survive it. With huge quantities of loot protected by scientists and players alike, this substantial monument will either make you rich or strip you of all that you’re worth. It also has one of the more involved Red Card puzzles.

Strategy and Meta

Given its expansive, underground nature, the most useful way to look at Military Tunnels is from the top down.

There are two entrances into the tunnel, leading to the same place. However you enter, there will be 3 scientists to the right guarding the Fuse Room, which you can ignore if you aren’t here to complete the Red Card puzzle. To the left, there is a hobo barrel and a ramp leading down to the rest of the monument.

Head down the ramp and get to the first corner. On the left, you will see the Rocket, as well as the entrance to the second side of the tunnel. To the right is the pathway that leads to the Elite Crates and Red Card room.

Once you get to the Rocket, you will be presented with two more choices on where to go. If you don’t want to do the Red Card puzzle, you can dodge most of the scientists by running up onto the walkway to your right. Make sure you have good armor and weaponry to do this, so you can kill the few scientists you do encounter this way. It lacks cover, so caution is advised.

If you want to do the puzzle, you shouldn’t go along the walkway to the right, however. Instead, you should go left in order to clear out all the enemies to access the areas required for it. The Elite Crates are also in this direction. If these are all you came for, you can head back out with your loot, but to complete the Red Room puzzle, you will need to continue down the tunnel, making sure to kill any enemies along the way so they won’t cause a problem during the puzzle.

Crates and Callouts

The following callouts correspond to the numbers on the image above:

  1. Train Station
  2. Sewer Entrance
  3. Airfield Tower
  4. Recycler
  5. Military Tunnels Entrance
  6. Hill Above the Entrance
  7. Cave Entrance
  8. Blue Crates and Box Car

The complexity of Military Tunnels means that there are many more possible callouts that you could use for individual sections of the monument. You should confer with your team to come up with ones useful for you — just make sure everyone is on the same page!

How to Complete the Red Card Room Puzzle

Once you clear out the enemies, you will be ready to complete the Red Room puzzle. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Fuse Room and insert a fuse, then flip the timer switch.
  2. Run to the Green Card room to the left of the Rocket, labeled “STORAGE”. Swipe your Gren Card and enter, then flip the switch in it.
  3. Run to the final door in the monument, labeled “LABORATORY”. Swipe your Blue Card to enter, and prepare for a fight.
  4. Wipe out the scientists inside. They are wielding SPAZ shotguns, so the safest way to kill them is to use grenades.
  5. Run inside and flip the timer underneath the Red Card swiper.
  6. Kill the enemies inside the Red Card Room, using the same method as the Blue Card Room, and claim your loot.

Military Tunnels is an incredibly powerful monument, so you should make sure to use this guide to clear it on your next wipe. Afterward, make sure to check out our other Monument Guides for information on the other monuments.
