We Happy Few – Happiness is just a Smile

Horror in video games has always caught my attention. Video games are unique because they immerse the player as if they are in it.  But nothing makes my skin crawl like having a utopia that seems oddly off. One world where you know that happiness is not only forced but is the root of insanity. We Happy Few, an aesthetically perfect looking game is releasing for PS4 on April 13, 2018. Better take a happy pill to enjoy this one.

A Strange Story

Occurring in the alternate timeline of The 1960’s, citizens of a tortured city take happy pills (Joy) that block memories. These memories are that of a horrific past that the town holds. Three stories told in completely different perspectives will reveal these dark secrets. What they have in common is that they all wish to escape. This, in turn, makes them Downers. Downers are wanted at all costs so that they won’t flee to the real world. Very reminiscent of the book ‘A Brave New World, I would love to see why this town has become a dark distopia.

How can we escape?

Three characters, who are wildly different will be available to play. Taking advantage of the character’s gameplay style is crucial to either escaping stealthy, getting into physical conflict or blending in with the rest. I love to be able to outsmart my foes by stealth. On the other hand, I do like to blend into the world by taking a Joy pill because the world completely changes.

Misleading Utopia

The world of a futuristic 1960’s is fascinating. Its world is very psychedelic when taking a joy pill. The developers ensured that each time a new play through is done the world will always be different. The sober-night perspective is going to be drastically different from that of the “high as a kite” aspect of Joy. I am always intrigued when areas are different every single time. I hope this leaves me on edge every single time.

We Happy Few will be released on April 13th, 2018 on Ps4 for $29.99. PS Plus members will get a 15% off the total price of the game. Along with that an in-game Jolly Brolly Parasol weapon and a dynamic theme. Anyone that wishes to expand their playthrough can get the season pass with the deluxe edition of the game. So make sure you take your perfect copy along with your Joy, you wouldn’t want to be a downer would you?
