UWO: Origin Update

Origin’s official Ultima Worlds Online website has been updated with another development commentary, this time by Peter “Hyperion” Freese, the game’s graphics programmer. He talks about what effect graphics have on MMORPGs and what input graphics have on the sale and longevity of a game. Here’s a bit of what he has to say:


    Players often lament that game developers too often spend more time working on pretty graphics on not enough on good solid game design. The irony behind this is, of course, that games without pretty graphics don’t sell well. How many of you are buying well-designed text-based games with a deep compelling stories? Not many, given the current selection of game titles on store shelves. The typical boxed game has all the flash of a fireworks display, and the depth of an Alaskan oil spill. In other words, they’re much like Hollywood movies.
