Upcoming Horror RPGs

With the month of October upon us and Halloween just a few weeks away, people want to play some scary games. Enter ComicBook.com with a list of their 10 most anticipated horror games. And surprisingly enough, a couple of them are RPGs.

First, we have Cyanide’s Call of Cthulhu that fully embraces Lovecraftian madness and should come out somewhere in 2018 (the game got delayed after the original article has gone up). And then, there’s Project Wight, an intriguing viking-themed horror RPG slated for a 2018 release, where you play as a monster that has to grow and become stronger in the vein of the 1999 and 2001 Aliens versus Predator games. Call of Cthulhu – Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC

No set release date at this time, slated for 2017

This game is perfect for those that have an appreciation for all things Lovecraftian. The title is mysterious and promises the perfect blend of cult horror, insanity, and an engaging narrative. According the game’s official synopsis:

“A Private Detective, Edward Pierce is on a mission to find the truth behind the death of an acclaimed artist and her family on a backwater island. Pierce is used to trusting his instincts, but with whale mutilations and disappearing bodies, this is only the beginning as reality becomes skewed. As your investigation leads you closer to the sphere of influence of the Great Dreamer, you will start to doubt everything you see. You will have to find balance between your own sanity, and your determination in finding out what lurks in the shadows—as they say that madness is the only way that can bring you to the truth. On a mission to find the truth behind the death of an acclaimed artist and her family on a backwater island, the player will soon uncover a more disturbing truth as the Great Dreamer, Cthulhu, prepares its awakening…”

Project Wight – PC

Project Wight is a unique game because it steps outside of the typical horror schemes. This Viking RPG centers around humans and a point of contact with an incredibly intelligent brace. What makes this interesting is not that it’s a Viking RPG, but that you probably assumed you were playing as the human. Nope! This game puts players directly into the role of an unknown race. As the mysterious creature, the cruelty of mankind’s capability is something the player must endure if they wish to survive. This intriguing take on the player experience in an RPG environment is exciting and something that I feel everyone needs to give a chance.
