SWG Q&A

There’s some good Question & Answering going on at the official Star Wars Galaxies message boards, with game meister Holocron. Catch this bit o’ honey:

Q: Shouldn’t you be able to build on skills? Without “forgetting” how to do other stuff? Did Luke forget how to farm moisture when he became a Jedi Knight? When you grow as a character in this game, you seem to have to sacrifice your past to gain future skills.

A: Only if you’re already at the point where you used up all your skill points, and that won’t be an easy point to reach. It absolutely IS realistic to have to give up old abilities to learn new ones, especially ones involving muscle memory. If I don’t practice my guitar regularly, I get worse at it. And once I picked up guitar, my piano skills got terrible. Likewise, I used to play tennis, but when I picked up racquetball, my tennis skills got much much worse, probably because they were similar enough to throw me off.
