Storytelling in Games, Part Two

IGN has put online the second part of their “Storytelling in Games” feature, and this time they quiz big games of the industry about the challenges associated with telling a good story in a game. A couple of short, but nonetheless interesting, snippets:

IGN: Are gameplay and storytelling at odds in modern video games? In other words, how difficult is it to consolidate the players’ actions with the story built around them?

CD Projekt – Tomasz Gop, Senior Producer:
Not everybody wants that, to start with. But, yeah, if you aim to keep the game consistent you probably have to think about common points, intersections. In The Witcher 2, we bound the storyline with Geralt’s expert knowledge on monsters and it seems to have played out right. That’s just an example we also found ways to incorporate storyline parts into character development. Oh well – you can always find means if you want to.

BioWare – Casey Hudson, Executive Producer:
Gameplay and storytelling really need to be woven together to tell a good story in an interactive medium. In fact, in the best game, the gameplay is the delivery mechanism for the story.

For those of you who were wondering: no Chris Avellone in this part either.
