Space Siege E3 Previews

IGN and GameSpy are next in line with their E3 impressions of Sega and Gas Powered Games’ Space Siege. A little something from IGN’s article:

The main character, Seth Walker, is a human that isn’t taking his species’ destruction well. He’s rather angry about the whole situation and has decided that he’s not going to take it anymore and that he’s willing to sacrifice his own humanity to save everyone else from destruction. The player has to decide is how much he or she is willing to sacrifice. Throughout the game, Walker will have the chance to upgrade his body with new experimental machine body parts that allow him to move faster, fight harder, and generally survive most hostile environments. But taking these parts means losing a piece of Walker’s humanity as well. The story will apparently be affected by the choices you make though Chris Taylor was reticent to say anymore aside from “We’re hoping this is something that players choose to experiment with a bit.” By the end of the game Seth Walker could be a hulking bot of destruction or just a heavily modified human being.

The difference between Space Siege and similar monster stomping dungeons romps is more than just the sci-fi setting. Apparently every piece of himself that Seth sacrifices for a cybernetic enhancement will gradually strip his humanity away from him. As Seth becomes more machine than man, his voice-over and dialogue will change, becoming colder and less emotional. The text indicators in the game, including quest text, will gradually alter to reflect the character’s growing estrangement from his origins as well the reactions of the humans and others Seth will encounter as he goes through the game. Depending on how much of Seth’s soul is left intact at the end of the game, the ending will actually change to reflect Seth’s choice.
