PUBG Mobile Nominated For Two Google Play Awards

The phenomenon that is PUBG is, it seems, not showing any signs of stopping. The game launched on mobile platforms not long ago—the result of a partnership with Chinese giant Tencent—and now it’s been nominated for two awards in the 2018 Google Play Awards.

The battle royale shooter has been nominated in the “Best Breakout Hit” and “Best Community Building Game” categories. It finds itself up against the likes of Pokemon Go, Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. In a joint statement, PUBG Corp. and Tencent said “The team is honored and thrilled that PUBG MOBILE has been recognized by Google Play. The response to the game from fans has energized everyone at the studio as we are heads down working on new, exciting updates for PUBG MOBILE”.

I hopped into the mobile version of the game not long ago and was surprised by how it not only functionally matched the tension and thrill of its desktop counterpart but made gaming on a touchscreen make a bit more sense than most shooters on the App Store. The presence of bots in the matchmaking and smart changes to UI resulted in a really great pick-up-and-play experience.

The winners of the Google Play Awards will be announced on Monday, May 7th. There are nine categories covering a range of games and apps, and the other nominees can be viewed here.
