Overwatch – Why I Prefer Mystery Heroes Match

A few weeks ago we were treated to a few Overwatch changes. We were given a few more match types, and a new Arcade mode. The Arcade mode brings in some game types. We have 1v1, and 3v3, and now we’re restricted with only one of each hero in Quick Play, there is also a 6v6 No Limits Brawl where you can choose whoever you want. However, my favourite of all the new brawl types is the Mystery Heroes match. You start with a randomly generated hero, and each time you die you get another random hero.

Why is Mystery Heroes my favourite brawl in Arcade mode? Well if you stick with me, I’ll tell you.

Gain Experience With Different Heroes

A fairly obvious one to start off with but because you have no choice over the heroes you play, you aren’t allowed the luxury of not playing the characters you suck at. If you get Widowmaker and you can’t snipe to save your life (semi-pun intended), well you have a go, and hopefully by the end of the match or by the time you bite it, you have a better understanding of how to play her.

You’re also a little more likely to die if you’re playing a character you hate, so you’re not likely to be stuck with a bad choice for long, unless it turns out that you can be good with them.

New Problems to Solve

Everyone has heroes chosen at random, and as such it’s not only your team that’s constantly changing but the opponent’s team as well. This constant shift of heroes and playstyles throws up a lot of situations that you may not encounter normally. What if you’re trying to attack the payload with a full team of support? What if the opposing team has three snipers and you don’t have any? Mystery Heroes mode is constantly creating problems and asking you to solve them, MacGyver style.

Less Moaning

One thing I’ve noticed with a Mystery Heroes Match is that there is a lot less moaning and bitching. I’ve played a fair few matches now, well into the double figures I’d say and I can’t remember a single instance of anybody moaning or blaming the loss on any one person.

Part of this is because it’s a lot harder to track an individual player’s ability if they’re switching between heroes. The biggest reason for the lack of negativity is that a lot of other players are a in a similar situation. Most players are playing heroes they’re not awesomely proficient at against non-meta teams of people in the same boat.

Weekly Loot Box Challenge

If you wanted another reason to play Mystery Heroes, well wins count towards your weekly challenge total. For those not in the know, each week you are rewarded a loot box for every three arcade wins up to nine wins, so three loot boxes in total. Especially with the Overwatch Christmas event in full swing a few more chances at getting your hands on those new skins and intros is almost certainly worth diving into the arcade mode a little more.

So, if you’ve never played the Mystery Heroes match before jump in and give it a go. I’ve already told you all the reasons why I love it. If there’s any reasons I’ve missed off, or reasons why you really hate playing Arcade matches then drop them in the comments below.
