Obsidian Confirms Pillars of Eternity II is in Production, Will Probably be Crowdfunded Again

The folks at Gamepressure had the chance to score a full-on interview (which will be published in the coming days) with Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart and came back with a juicy bit of info indeed: Pillars of Eternity II is indeed in production. While many of us suspected as much (especially since Obsidian wasn’t shy about dropping hints in previous press releases and interviews, not to mention on social media), it’s still nice to get confirmation, plus we now know that the game will very likely be crowdfunded, just like the original:

We were talking about the general idea of crowdfunding Obsidian’s games, Feargus said that they thought about crowdfunding Tyranny, but decided to do it on their own. However, they’re most probably going to turn to Kickstarter to crowdfund Pillars of Eternity II, and that’s when Feargus shared what they’re currently involved on:

Obviously, as you’ve probably guessed, we’re starting to move forward on [Pillars of] Eternity II. That is probably something that we want to look at [in terms of crowdfunding]. I think people felt like we delivered on our promise, and then that felt like we could go with Eternity II and people would support us again, because they trust us.

Eternity II is not announced, [but] it seems silly for me not to acknowledge it, though. If someone asks (Are you working on it?), I respond (Well, wouldn’t you work on it?). So then they say (So you must be working on it), and then I’m like (Well, yeah).

Interestingly, the article also mentions a secret project a handful of developers are working on at the Californian studio, including two names fans of 90s CRPG should know well: Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, two of the original Fallout developers. The project might be connected to Feargus’ earlier mention of an Unreal Engine 4 prototype during his video interview with GameInformer last year, and while that’s certainly possible, Obsidian’s CEO stopped short of making the connection (ed. note: I originally incorrectly stated this was purely Gamepressure’s speculation. The article has now been amended.)
