IGN previews Cryptic upcoming Neverwinter game, or they have Cryptic’s Jack Emmert take us through some of the games most important elements.

As far as character classes go, “At launch, we’re focusing on five classes: Wizard, Fighter, Rogue, Ranger, Cleric,” said Emmert. “We think these represent the core archetypes of the 4th edition rule set (Controller, Defender, Striker, Ranger Striker, Support). After launch, we’ll be supplementing the game with more and more character classes, so expect to see old favorites like Paladins, Barbarians, Monks and Bards fairly quickly. There is a main storyline, though we’ve also added many side quests to reward the explorers. A dedicated player can follow the major tale, but for people who like to explore, there’s many other tales that players can stumble across.”

Since we haven’t yet had a chance to play the game, Emmert talked about how the gameplay will actually work. “Right now, it’s an action-RPG, so there are no turns, no initiative rolls. We may add the pause feature that we have in Star Trek Online so that players can take a breath during combat, but that’s not final. We’re still playtesting.” Brady added, “The moment to moment gameplay is all about teamwork and tactics. We’re offering lots of ways for your powers to interact with those of your allies, and over time you’ll learn to work together to use those powers to be a more effective team.”
