Indiecade East and Spacewar! go to New York

indiecade international game festival independantIndiecade, the International Festival of Independent Games is heading to the east coast for the first time, the east coast of America of course, not England for those few people inexplicably confused there. If you do happen to be lucky enough to live over near New York, or just happen to be on holiday there you really should head over to the Museum of Moving Image between the 15th and 17th of February for Indiecade East.

There’s a crap load of independently developed games for you to try, 27 in fact from the submissions to the Indiecade 2012 festival.

From March 3rd, the Museum is hosting ‘Spacewar! Video Games Blast Off!’ that commemorates the 50 years of video games by hosting activities such as a game design challenge, and an arcade tournament.

If you can get your ass there then you really should. If you’re still on the fence, then try reading the full press release below.

IndieCade is coming to the east coast for the first time, Friday – Sunday, Feb. 15 – 17.  The Museum of the Moving Image in New York City will host the videogame festival.

IndieCade East will offer gamers of all ages the chance to try 27 top games from independent developers as well as the upcoming Oculus Rift, attend workshops and panels, participate in an arcade tournament as well as watch game creation happen live.

Special guests include Kris Piotrowski (creator of Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP) and Doug Wilson (Johann Sebastien Joust).

Children can also learn what its like to make a game in “The Game-Making Game,” a workshop for ages 8 and older.

Spacewar! Video Games Blast Off, an exhibition that commemorates the 50th anniversary of video games, will be on view through March 3.

Activities include:

  • Night Games, a Saturday evening of game play over two floors of the Museum
  • A New York-centric game design challenge: students and faculty from NYU Game Center and Parsons The New School for Design will face-off in a real-time competition to design a video game in one hour
  • Game Slam, in which game makers present their works and an ongoing festival Show and Tell, inviting attendees to share their own games and to receive feedback
  • A 10-game arcade tournament
  • A festival-long game jam, in which invited participants work day-and-night to build a game, culminating in a presentation of the completed games

“Since its inception 25 years ago, the Museum has embraced video games as part of our mission,” explained Carl Goodman, Executive Director of the Museum.  “Hosting the nation’s most significant independent game festival is a natural next step.”
