Hellblade wins Best Writing in a Video Game from the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain

Ninja Theory’s Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice has won the “Best Writing in a Video Game” award from The Writers’ Guild of Great Britain. Elizabeth Ashman-Rowe and Tameem Antoniades collected the award for their work on the game.

The game won against Battlefield 1 and Subsurface Circular, amongst other awards for radio, TV and film. Previous winners of the Best Writing in a Video Game award have included Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture and Virginia in 2016 and 2017 respectively.

Hellblade received critical acclaim and numerous end-of-year awards thanks to its shockingly nuanced portrayal of psychosis, mythology-heavy narrative and fluid action combat. The team at Ninja Theory spent a lot of time in development researching and discussing how best to represent the rather taboo topic of mental health. In particular, Melinda Juergens received wide praise for her performance as the titular Senua.
