Dungeon Siege III Reviews

We have rounded up some more reviews for Square Enix and Obsidian Entertainment’s hack’n’slash Dungeon Siege III, impressions being – as you’ve grown to expect at this point – very mixed.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun has one of their customary scoreless “Wot I Think” corners.

Of course, for all its shortcomings I played it for hours anyway, stayed up too late, got RSI, ate only chemically-flavoured snackfoods. That’s how these things go, isn’t it? It’s a solid enough hack’n’slash game with varied environments and some inventive skills, and that certainly kept me playing but when you can pick up something like Torchlight or Titan Quest for pennies (both of which are also far more attractive and characterful), it’s really hard to recommend dropping £30-odd on this. If a patch that fixes up the PC control and display oversights and rethinks the presentation of stats does show up, I’ll certainly feel a lot more fond of Dungeon Siege III. For now though: resume frustrated waiting for Diablo III.

My Gaming, 60%.

Dungeon Siege III is not a total train wreck by any stretch of the imagination. The combat is fairly enjoyable and requires good reflexes. However, Dungeon Siege III fails where it matters most, and that is in being a good RPG.

The loot is pointless and the skills are bland. Anyone looking for a good Action RPG should steer well clear. Rather stick to the old classics.

Neoseeker, 7/10.

As a solo experience, Dungeon Siege III is a fine adventure, and absolutely one of the better action RPGs around. The co-op experience I cannot vouch for, because, as mentioned, it wasn’t available, but I reckon it’d bump the fun factor up a considerable amount. For console players, this should be a no brainer if you dig the likes of Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance; for PC players, it’ll take a patch or two before it’s up to snuff, and while not as deep as some of its bretheren, still proves a commendable work, partly for the gameplay, and partly for being the first polished Obsidian game.

RoboAwesome, 77%.

The graphics won’t win any awards or anything, but they do look nice for what they are. Decent amount of detail went into the backgrounds. The soundtrack does its job as far as giving you an ambiance for the place you’re in. Other than that I doubt I will remember the score. The voice acting isn’t terrible. I was surprised. Unless of course you pick Anjali who sounds like a female robot. Perhaps this is how Archons talk, but man it’s annoying.

One of the great features of this game is the couch multiplayer. It’s only for two people, but it feels good sitting next to your buddy hacking and slashing enemies. It reminds me of the good ol’ days playing contra, double dragon, and the TMNT games. I know there are still plenty of couch games, like Smash Bros, but you can definitely see where developers are slowly fading that mechanic away. There is also an online multiplayer that supports four players, which is pretty fun, but nothing beats the couch multiplayer.

The Daily DL, 6.5/10.

As far as re-playability goes unless your interested in playing the game again as one of the other starting characters I don’t see much a reason to delve back into the world. The lack of a (New game +) option also hurts the games longevity as once your done with the campaign that character is also done. The game really would have benefited with the ability to start a new game with your character on a higher difficulty. Overall Dungeon Siege 3 is a fun game with an interesting story as well as fun and fast paced combat but the experience is tarnished by poorly implemented multiplayer, lack of re-playability, and poor PC controls.
