Bloodborne Expansion in the Works, Sony Surprised by Sales

Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony’s Worldwide Studios, has confirmed on Twitter something most of us were, at the very least, strongly suspecting: Bloodborne is going to get some DLC. To be precise, Yoshida uses the word “expansion” in relation to the as of yet unannounced downloable content for From Software’s Victorian action-RPG, so I’d expect it to be  at least comparable to the previous DLCs from the Japanese developer in size, if not larger. Either way, more info should come “later this year”:

So I have been asked by many people if we are making DLC for Bloodborne. I can say… An expansion is coming. More info later this year. 😀

As I alluded to earlier, the fact that Bloodborne is getting more content post-release should come as no surprise, considering SCE UK head Fergal Gara claimed the title’s sales positively surprised them in spite of their already high expectations during an interview with MCV UK:

(It did surprise us,) says Gara. (We had expectations to do well. We looked at the Souls series as a frame of reference, and we thought we could do better than that. We did and then some. Relative to some of our sister territories, we were being quite ambitious, but even that proved to be conservative.

(I think Bloodborne might have just landed just at the right time; it was a relatively quiet time, it was a very high quality title and a great platform differentiator for us. We were caught a little bit behind in terms of the volume, but we were able to chase it and maximise its potential.)

I have my share of gripes with Bloodborne, including the relatively small amount of content, but it’s an excellent title and I’m very glad to hear that there will be more of it to play in the future.
