In this guide we’ll show you everything there is to know about Arroyo, your hometown in the game.
Introduction
Arroyo is your home village, and you’ll find a lot of prejudice against tribals throughout the game, though it really won’t affect anything of importance. Keep Vic’s Water Flask which you’ll receive from the Arroyo Elder. I once made the mistake of selling it and you can use it for “proof” of your ancestry in a couple places.
Your main goal here is simply to receive the main quest from the Elder — to find the Garden of Eden Creation Kit — and a few others as well if you wish for xp. Keep in mind that the order of areas in the walkthrough is just a guideline, and you’re generally free to attempt them in any order, as long as you feel capable.
Quests & Opportunities
Here is a list of some of the quests and other opportunities in Arroyo, each with a brief synopsis containing at least one way to solve it. The remaining ways, and possibly other minor quests I will leave up to you.
Fix the Well
Next to the Village’s well, you’ll meet your nephew Feargus. He’ll complain that the well is broken. If you use your Repair skill to fix it — any skill level seems to work — then you’ll earn 100xp, and you’ll make Feargus happy. “You the one!”
Receive Training
Lucas by the giant stone head monument in the Village can train you in Unarmed, provided you have at least 6 Agility. He’ll raise your skill level to 40% or 55% depending on how low it is. If your skill is already 55% or higher, then he won’t be able to help you.
In the tent east of the stone head, you’ll meet Jordan, who can train you in Melee Weapons. He’ll raise your skill by 10%, but the training will take 8 hours.
Rescue Nagor’s Dog Smoke from the Wilds
Speak with Nagor on the eastern side of the Village and he’ll ask that you find his dog Smoke. Exit the Village to the west, and you’ll arrive in a Wilderness area, where you’ll encounter roaming geckos. These critters are tough for a beginning character, so use the attack-and-run technique when taking them out. Just be aware that not all of the geckos will attack you, so you can skip some of them if you want.
You’ll find Smoke in the northwestern corner of the Wilderness. You’ll have to pass by some green goo to get to him. Don’t step in any of it, or you’ll take minor damage. When you get close enough to Smoke, he’ll begin following you. You’ll then just need to lead him back to Nagor to receive 100xp.
While you’re in the Wilderness area, keep an eye out for Broc Flowers and Xander Roots. After completing Hakunin’s quest (see below), those ingredients will allow him to craft Healing Powders for you. Press the shift key to highlight items on the ground.
Find Vic the Trader
When you talk to the Arroyo Elder inside her tent in the center of the Village, she’ll ask you to find a holy artifact called the Garden of Eden Creation Kit, or GECK for short. She’ll tell you to look for it in Vault 13, but she won’t know where the vault is located. However, she’ll hand you Vic’s Water Flask, which came from Vault 13, and she’ll suggest that tracking down Vic the Trader, who lives in Klamath, might be a good way to begin your search. She’ll also give you $152, and she’ll inform you that Klamath is located to the east, which will mark it on your world map.
When you reach Klamath, you’ll find Vic’s shop on the eastern side of the Downtown map. It’ll have a “Vic’s” sign out front, making it easy to spot. But you won’t find Vic inside. Instead, you’ll only discover some miscellaneous items (including more water flasks), plus Vic’s Radio and a Pipe Rifle. The radio is important for the quest, so you should grab it and take it with you.
Elsewhere in Klamath, you’ll meet a few people who will talk about Vic. Aldo (near the Downtown entrance) will tell you that Vic and Jenny were an item. Jenny (in the Bath House) and Whiskey Bob (in the Buckner House) will mention that Vic frequently traded with the Den. Sulik (also in the Buckner House) will reveal that Vic claimed to know a lot about slavers.
With this information in hand, you should head for the Den, located to the southeast. Be sure you have Vic’s Radio with you. One of the first buildings you’ll see in the town is Becky’s Casino Bar. Inside, if you ask Rebecca about Vic, then she’ll tell you that Metzger has him locked up.
You’ll find Metzger in the Slaver’s Guild on the East Side of town. To free Vic, you’ll need to help him fix Metzger’s radio, plus shell out $1000 (or maybe only $500). See our quest entry for Free Vic from His Debt for details. When Vic’s a free man again, he’ll agree to join you. If you ask him about Vault 13 and show him Vic’s Water Flask, then he’ll reveal that he got it from a merchant in Vault City, and he’ll mark Vault City on your world map. This will earn you $200.
Obtain Flint to Have Mynoc Sharpen Your Spear
If you have at least 6 Perception, find Mynoc the guard at the Bridge south of the Village, and speak with him. You’ll notice his Sharpened Spear, and if you mention it to him, then he’ll tell you he can do the same with yours if you fetch him some Flint.
You can get Flint from your aunt Morlis, whom you’ll find standing in front of a tent south of the well in the Village. Morlis will demand three Healing Powders for it, but that’s a bad deal. Instead, you can just barter with her and get the Flint for $10, or trade her a Scorpion Tail for it, provided you have any left over from the Temple of Trials. Healing Powders are worth $20 each. If your Speech skill is over 50%, then you can talk Morlis out of the Flint, or you can steal it from her. If you fail to steal the Flint twice, then she’ll just give it to you.
Note: You can find $100 in a pot in Morlis’ tent.
When you deliver the Flint to Mynoc, he’ll upgrade on of your Spears into a Sharpened Spear, or he’ll simply give you a Sharpened Spear if you don’t have any regular Spears in your inventory.
Kill the Evil Plants that Infest Hakunin’s Garden
Northwest of the Elder’s tent, you’ll find Hakunin, the village shaman. He’ll ask you to take care of the two spore plants in his garden to the north. Spore plants are kind of nasty for low level characters, mostly because they have 40 hit points, so before attacking them, get training and complete Mynoc’s quest (see above).
Spore plants can’t move, and they have poor — and limited — ranged attacks. So equip your Sharpened Spear, move two hexes from a plant, attack it, and then retreat. This will keep you out of range of the plant’s melee attacks, and force it to shoot Plant Spikes at you, which it’ll quickly run out of. Once a spore plant is out of ammunition, it won’t be able to attack you at all, provided you stay out of its melee range. So If you keep attacking and retreating, then you’ll eventually wear the plants down and take little damage in return.
When you kill the spore plants in the garden, you’ll earn 100xp. Then when you return to Hakunin, he’ll thank you for your help, and he’ll start performing his shaman duties — healing you if you’re wounded, or crafting Healing Powders for you, provided you bring him Broc Flowers and Xander Root, which you can find in the Wilderness map to the west of the Village. “May your pathways be true and your heart follow suit.”
Retrieve the GECK for Arroyo
This is the main quest for Arroyo. You’ll solve it much later so continue on to Klamath when you’re finished here.
