Walkthrough

For this quest you’ll need to deliver the Crux of Ages to Bastion Spire. To reach the Spire, you’ll have to fight your way through the Goblin Citadel (located in Western Crakamir) and defeat the goblin Gramuk at the end (#1). Gramuk isn’t too powerful on his own, but he’ll summon some Giant Arachnids to help him out, and he’ll turn into a Dirachnid once you’ve done enough damage to him. The Dirachnid has about 260 hit points, but it’s possible you’ll totally outclass it depending on the equipment you’ve managed to find. When the Dirachnid dies, it will drop a Silver Key, which will grant you access to the room with the portal to Bastion Spire (Exit A). You’ll also earn 2500 xp.

Inside Bastion Spire, you’ll only be able to access Level 5, where you’ll find the Chancellor (#2) and the pedestal for the Crux of Ages (#3). When you place the Crux onto the pedestal, you’ll earn 5000 xp and complete the quest. Doing this will also cause the Chancellor to come to his senses and the portal back to the Goblin Citadel (Exit A) to become inactive. So only place the Crux onto the pedestal when you’re ready to complete the game.

There are three possible endings for Book I:

  • You can agree to Gramuk’s bribe when you talk to him (#1). He’ll pay you 83,510 gp for the Crux of Ages, and you’ll make your way to the west, where you’ll buy a farm and watch as the goblins take over Thaermore. You’ll always feel a little bit guilty for going this route.
  • You can place the Crux of Ages onto the pedestal (#3) and then talk to the Chancellor (#2). You’ll get a modest reward for your actions, but the Commonwealth Guard will get credit for recovering the Crux of Ages, and you’ll end up living in a small cottage with a few rabbits in the garden. Eventually you’ll start having bad dreams, and you’ll sense “whispers in the darkness and movement in the shadows” (cue Book II).
  • You can attack the Chancellor (#2), with or without placing the Crux onto the pedestal (#3) first. The Chancellor will probably die in one hit, but he’ll still call out, and 16 Spire Guards will show up and attack you. The Spire Guards are reasonably tough (they have 300 hit points and are worth 400 xp each), so you might want to run to the gate next to the pedestal so you can fight them one at a time. After the battle, an “awesome” window will pop up awarding you the title of Destroyer, and you’ll receive the same ending as if you had sided with Gramuk.

Regardless of your choice, congratulations for completing Eschalon: Book I!
