How to Respec – Elden Ring

On your journey throughout the Lands Between, you will be steadily accumulating runes, and leveling up is the easiest way to make sure that you won’t lose them upon dying. However, whenever you find a new weapon you would like to try or new spells you want to play with, you may not always have the required stats. Luckily, for players that regret their stat allocation or just simply want to try a different playstyle, there is a way to reallocate your stats fairly early on.

Unlocking Rebirth

In Elden Ring, reallocating your stats happens through a Rebirth mechanic. Unfortunately, this mechanic only becomes available after defeating the main boss in Liurnia of the Lakes. And while the access to this boss’s dungeon needs to be unlocked, you can check out our Liurnia of the Lakes walkthrough if you need help doing so.

Additionally, while most players will reach Liurnia of the Lakes after going through Stormveil Castle, you can skip that legacy dungeon entirely and go straight to Liurnia of the Lakes from Limgrave.

Once the boss is defeated, you will find the Rennala NPC next to the Raya Lucaria Grand Library site of grace, and speaking to her will allow you to use the rebirth mechanic to reallocate your stats.

Rebirth Mechanic

After unlocking the Rebirth mechanic, you will be able to speak to Rennala and use the rebirth screen to reallocate the stats, as long as you have a Larval Tear in your inventory. While these are rare, you will be able to get your hands on quite a few during your playthrough, so while you won’t be able to reallocate your stats an unlimited amount of times, you don’t have to be too worried about wasting any Larval Tears.

Speaking to Rennala and spending a Larval Tear to gain access to the Rebirth menu will open a menu similar to the one you use to level up, where you’ll be able to reallocate your stats.

While you’ll be able to change your stats, you will not be able to change the ones that were determined by your class selection at the start of the game. As an example, you can see above that the Prisoner’s base stats remain unchanged.

One thing to note however is that the Rebirth mechanic does not allow you change your level. The “Confirm” button will remain greyed out as long as you haven’t spent the entirety of the available Attribute Points. So while you’ll be able to change your stat allocation, if for any reason you want to lower your character’s level, the only way to do so is to start a new game.
