Walkthrough

When you talk to Anders in his clinic in Darktown, he’ll tell you that he’s discovered a way to separate himself from Justice, but that to create the necessary potion he’ll need two “outlandish ingredients” — sela petrae and drakestone. Depending on how you respond, you can gain some friendship or rivalry points with Anders and your other companions:

  • In your first response, if you say “You’re right,” then you’ll gain rivalry points with Anders. If you say “You’re wrong,” then you’ll gain friendship points with Anders.

  • In your second (or third) response, if you say “Let’s do it,” then you’ll gain friendship points with Anders and rivalry points with Fenris. If you say “Well, that’s good,” then you’ll gain rivalry points with Fenris. If you say “I don’t want any part of this,” then you’ll gain friendship points with Fenris (but the quest will come to an immediate end).

  • In your third (or fourth) response, if you say “Sounds easy enough,” then you’ll gain friendship points with Anders. If you ask “Is that…all?” then you’ll gain rivalry points with Anders.

You’ll find the ingredients in two places:

  • Darktown (The Sewers). At this location you’ll get attacked by groups of mercenaries, lyrium smugglers, and apostates, and you’ll have to avoid several traps (T), but you’ll find five sela petrae deposits, and you’ll need to interact with all of them to gather what Anders needs. After gathering the fifth deposit, you’ll gain 800 xp.

  • The Bone Pit (Drakestone Mines). At this location you’ll get attacked by a variety of giant spiders, including a monstrous spider, and you’ll also have to avoid several traps (T), but you’ll find five drakestone deposits, and you’ll need to interact with all of them to gather what Anders needs. After gathering the fifth deposit, you’ll gain 800 xp.

After collecting the ingredients, you’ll need to talk to Anders again in his Darktown clinic. He’ll ask you to distract Grand Cleric Elthina so he can sneak into the Chantry and do something. If you question him, then Anders will reveal that he isn’t really trying to separate himself from Justice, but he won’t tell you what he has planned. He’ll only claim that his actions will help the mages of Kirkwall. You’ll get two ways to respond:

  • If you agree to help, then you’ll gain friendship points with Anders and rivalry points with Fenris. To distract Elthina, you’ll just need to go into the Chantry and talk to her. After a while, Anders will come up to you, and you’ll automatically return to the clinic. Then when you talk to Anders again, Anders will gain his Renegade’s Coat, and you’ll earn 1200 xp plus some more friendship points with Anders.

  • If you refuse to help, then you’ll gain rivalry points with Anders, but friendship points with Fenris and Sebastian. This decision will end the quest without a reward, but Anders will still complete his plan, just without your help.

You won’t learn what Anders was up to until you reach the final quest in the campaign, The Last Straw.

1 – Sela Petrae Deposits

2 – Rubble

Examining the rubble here will give you or update the “lore” codex entry for The Enigma of Kirkwall. You’ll need to find several of these codex entries for the Archaeologist achievement.

3 – Locked Chest

Inside this “complex” locked chest, you’ll find Dragonscale Boots.

4 – Corspe

On this corpse you’ll find Warden’s Oath.

5 – Drakestone Deposits

6 – Deep Mushroom

7 – Corpse

On this corpse you’ll find a Griffon-Feather Belt.
