Background

You’ll receive this quest from Yevhen in Hightown.

Note: From what we can tell, this quest will only appear if your character doesn’t qualify for the Act III quest Finding Nathaniel (that is, if the game thinks Nathaniel died in Origins).

Walkthrough

Yevhen will tell you that his three sons Emrys, Merin and Iwan went into the Deep Roads after hearing stories about your exploits there, and he’ll ask you to locate them and bring them back. If you refuse this task, then you’ll gain friendship points with Isabela and rivalry points with Sebastian. If you accept the task (which you’ll have to do eventually to continue with the quest), then you’ll gain friendship points with Sebastian and rivalry points with Isabela.

You’ll find the entrance to the Deep Roads in the Free Marches portion of your world map. Inside, you’ll get attacked by darkspawn, but shortly you’ll come to Emrys sitting in front of a closed door (#1). Emrys will tell you that Iwan is obsessed with a sword that’s supposed to be in the area, and that he locked Merin in a room full of darkspawn. You’ll then have to tell Emrys what you plan to do — either go after Iwan and the sword, or save Merin — but this declaration won’t actually decide anything for you. However, if you tell Emrys that you plan to go after the sword, then you’ll gain rivalry points with Aveline and Sebastian. If you tell Emrys that you plan to save Merin, then you’ll gain friendship points with Sebastian.

Go After the Sword

For this case you’ll need to head directly to Iwan (#5). When you reach him, you’ll find him being attacked by a small group of darkspawn. After the battle, Iwan will decide to return to Kirkwall, but first he’ll try to sell you a Golem Control Rod. If you want to, you can pay him 50 silvers for it. Otherwise, you can intimidate him into giving it to you for free (with or without Varric’s help). The control rod will allow you to take control of a golem (#6), which will then follow along behind you and help you to defeat the other golems in the area (#7).

When you reach the treasure cache (#9), you’ll discover that the chest with the sword has been smashed and looted, but you’ll still find Zoey’s Battered Horde-Kickers, Potency, and Sundarin Thunder in the other chests. You’ll also find a Lyrium-Laced Bilge Hoop on the floor, and it will trigger the quest “Lyrium-Laced Bilge Hoop” when you pick it up. To complete that quest, you’ll just need to take the hoop to the Whiskey Master in Darktown, who will reward you with 1 sovereign and 750 xp.

When you return to Yevhen in Hightown, you’ll have to make a decision. If you lie to cover up Iwan’s misdeeds, then you’ll gain rivalry points with Aveline and Sebastian. If you tell the truth, then you’ll gain friendship points with Sebastian (Iwan will also threaten revenge, but you won’t see him again). Either way, Yevhen will reward you with 2 sovereigns and 1000 xp.

Save Merin

For this case you’ll need to head directly to Merin (#4). When you reach him, you’ll find him being attacked by a group of darkspawn, including a pair of darkspawn emissaries. After the battle, Merin will return to Kirkwall, and you’ll decide to check up on Iwan and his sword. When you reach Iwan (#5), you discover that he’s dead, but you’ll find a Golem Control Rod on his corpse. If you use the control rod on the first golem you encounter (#6), then it will wake up and begin following you, and it will assist you against the other golems in the area (#7).

When you fight your way to the treasure cache (#9), you’ll discover that the darkspawn have smashed some of the chests and taken some of the loot (including Iwan’s sword), but you’ll still find Zoey’s Battered Horde-Kickers and 4 sovereigns inside.

When you return to Yevhen in Hightown, he’ll reward you with 2 sovereigns and 1000 xp.
