1 – Greal
2 – Shearah’s House

Walkthrough

Greal will inform you that Balberith the demon has captured Shearah the Forest Spirit, and this will prompt Jahan to reveal to you his backstory. He’ll tell you that he made a regrettable deal with Balberith in his youth, and that the time is coming when he must give up his soul as payment. He’ll then announce that he has no intention of doing this and that he plans to kill the demon instead.

You’ll meet Balberith inside the basement of Shearah’s house in the Phantom Forest (#2). He’ll be amused when he sees Jahan, and there are three ways the conversation can go:

  • Balberith will offer you a deal. This will give you a chance to become more Bold (initiative +1) or Cautious (sneaking +1). If you accept the deal, then Balberith will reset Jahan, including his memories, and Jahan will no longer want to kill Balberith. On the downside, Jahan will probably lose several of his spells, which means you’ll have to visit some shopkeepers after you’ve reset him.

  • If you refuse the deal, then Balberith will ask you to hand over Jahan. This will give you a chance to become more Righteous (leadership +1) or Renegade (pickpocketing +1). If you do as Balberith asks, then Jahan will disappear from your party forever.

  • If you refuse both deals or demand that Balberith face you in battle, then you’ll have to fight him. Balberith will immediately summon four Slaves of Torment plus some cyclopes to help him out. The slaves will heal Balberith and improve his resistances, so you should target them first. However, you can’t just ignore Balberith, or else he might make short work of your spellcasters. So we’d recommend putting your best defensive character on Balberith while the rest of your party takes out the slaves and cyclopes.

For selecting either of the first two options, you’ll receive 10,260 xp at the end of the quest. For the third option, the quest won’t provide you with a reward, but you’ll earn over 60,000 xp for defeating Balberith and his minions.
