Unconfirmed: BioWare Developing Multiplayer Action Title

I realize this newsbit isn’t technically RPG-related, but I thought it was worth bringing to everyone’s attention given its implications to BioWare’s future video game lineup. Anyway, Blend Games is reporting that BioWare’s Rob Bartel is working on an “unannounced multiplatform action title” – or at least that’s what his LinkedIn profile claims:

The LinkedIn profile of Rob Bartel, a Dragon Age: Origins DLC designer, reveals that he worked on an “unannounced multiplatform action title” at BioWare Edmonton from 2006 to 2008. He served as “Lead Multiplayer Designer” on the project. Even if you tried to make the argument that Dragon Age or Mass Effect 2 has action elements and could be described as an action game, the fact remains that neither of those titles has a multiplayer component.

I know what you’re thinking and no, it’s probably not MDK3. BioWare did develop MDK2 but publisher Interplay apparently still has the rights. In April 2008, they announced their intentions to create an MDK sequel with their new in-house development team.

Maybe this is the Jade Empire sequel they’ve been hinting about for awhile? JE was definitely more action-oriented than most of BioWare’s titles, though I don’t see how a multiplayer component would work unless we’re talking about a cooperative element. Or perhaps we’ll see a spiritual successor to Shattered Steel? I’d take a good mech game with RPG elements and cooperative multiplayer any day.
